Cipriani: Agony

Wasps and England fly-half Danny Cipriani is facing six months on the sidelines after suffering a fracture dislocation of his right ankle.

Cipriani suffered the injury in the 21-10 Premiership play-off semi-final win over Bath.

The talented No.10 needed oxygen as he was carried off after having his right leg trapped beneath him following a tackle by Olly Barkley.

He underwent surgery on Sunday night to repair the damage, and will remain in hospital under observation before starting an intensive rehabilitation programme.

Cipriani will miss England's two-Test to New Zealand as well as being unlikely to play any part in the autumn internationals, with the 21-year-old needing around six months to recover.

England face Australia, South Africa and the All Blacks in the autumn, kicking off the run of matches against the Wallabies at Twickenham on November 15.

A replacement for England's June tour will be announced on Tuesday, with Gloucester's Ryan Lamb the most likely candidate to join Charlie Hodgson and Barkley in the squad.

Recovery

New England manager Martin Johnson, though, has offered his sympathy to Cipriani.

He said: "On behalf of the England summer tour squad we all feel for Danny over the injury he suffered on Sunday.

"The England medical team will be in regular contact with London Wasps over the next few months regarding his rehabilitation and we all wish Danny a speedy recovery.

"I will discuss with Rob Andrew and the coaches the candidates to replace Danny on the summer tour and we will make an announcement on Tuesday."

In a double blow for Wasps, Tom Voyce has been ruled out after dislocating his left shoulder.

Voyce will be discharged from hospital on Monday and will need to consult a shoulder specialists about the injury.

Head physiotherapist at Wasps Prav Mathema said: "On behalf of London Wasps, Danny and Tom, I would like to thank everyone who was involved in managing the treatment of those two players yesterday.

"London Wasps' own medical team, Bath's medical team, the paramedics, consultants and the Lister Hospital staff were exemplary in their medical care of these two players."

Dear Danny, I was really shocked by your injury but very impressed by the way it was managed by the players, the referee and all the medical staff. It was a very sad sight to see you being stretchered off. As a Bath and England supporter I have been really impressed by your skill and vision and look forward to seeing you back. Good luck with your rehabilitation, you will have lots of support.

this ia a horific injury to a young lad who has such skill and determination, and has a bright fourture, its a big set back for him, wasps and england, but the type of injury he will bounce back from, it will make him a better and stronger player, the doors will be wide open for his england and wasps return. I wish you thr best of luck for the furture.

I hope he makes a quick recovery and will be fighting fit to face us next season. A big loss for England and english rugby. Best wishes Danny.

Get well soon Danny. I don't care much for Wasps but Cipriani was my favourite of their players, his creativity is something I aspire to. Let's hope Ryan lamb, who I was amazed to see wasn't selected, get's his place in the squad and plays ahead of Hodgeson. We need that youth edge still in the side and Lamb is a quality 10 as he proved against Wasps.

You could see by the expression of pain on Danny's face that the injury was a bad one. Credit to the rest of the Wasps team to remain focused whilst he was being treated and then go on to win the game. Danny has a great talent.Whilst as a Wasps fan i want to see him and Tom Voyce , back in action as soon as possible i hope they do not come back from injury too early. No doubt they will both return stronger than ever and when they are fit - the door to the England squad will be wide open. Good luck to the the Wasps team for the final and to all the England squad on tour in New Zealand.

A real shame for a player who posseses power, pace and skill injuries can be the source of great frustration among professional athletes from all sports .This is a major set back for both wasps and the national team. Tough luck for a player who reminds me of myself!

An unfortunate miss-hap for a talented player. A harsh re-minder of the realities of professional life! Best of luck to Danny and Wasps, England will suffer the most for this incident as he was obviously a key part to Johnsons plans for the summer tour!
