Kuznetsova: Coming through in Toronto
Third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-2 7-6 (9-7) to book her place in the third round of Toronto's Rogers Cup.
The 2004 US Open champion was broken at 5-5 in the second set, but rallied to break back and force a tiebreaker.
It was the Russian's first action since going out of the Wimbledon quarter-finals to eventual winner Venus Williams in July.
Israel's Shahar Peer made lighter work of her second round opponent and doubles partner Tathiana Garbin.
The 11th seed won 6-3 6-2 to secure her first consecutive wins on the tour since Wimbledon.
In the day's final third round match-up, Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik was trailing 6-1 4-2 in her match against China's Peng Shuai, before illness forced the 14th seed to retire.
The last of the first round matches also saw Stephanie Dubois come from behind to advance past Ai Sugiyama 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 7-5, while Aleksandra Wozniak was beating Anastasia Rodionova 6-4 5-0 before the Russian retired with a thigh strain.
Marie-Eve Pelletier joined Canadian compatriots Dubois and Wozniak into the second round with a 5-7 6-4 6-2 victory over Ekaterina Shulaeva.
It is the first time that three Canadians have made it out of the first round since 1991.
In Tuesday's other matches, France's Nathalie Dechy beat Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi 6-4 7-5, and Virginie Razzano defeated Aravane Rezai 6-4 4-6 6-3.
San Diego and Los Angeles quarter-finalist Maria Kirilenko continued her impressive run of form with a 6-1 6-3 win over Germany's Martina Muller.
Thirteenth seed Sybille Bammer beat France's Emilie Loit 6-1 6-2, while Greece's Eleni Daniilidou defeated Gisela Dulko 6-2 6-3.
And Italy's Maria Elena Camerin sent Alona Bondarenko out of the competition with a 6-4 6-3 victory, while Slovenian qualifier Andreja Klepac beat American Meilen Tu 6-3 6-1.
