Simon: Claimed his first Tour title on American soil
Giles Simon defeated defending champion Dmitry Tursunov in straight sets in the final of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.
The Frenchman triumphed 6-4 6-4 to claim his second ATP Tour title in the space of three months and his fourth overall in his career.
Seeded second, the world number 25 was forced to save nine break points against the Russian before eventually sealing his first tournament success on American soil.
Having beaten both Tommy Haas and Sam Querrey on his way to the final, Simon is now hoping he can maintain his excellent form heading towards the US Open.
"My goal at the start of the season was to reach top 15," said the 23-year-old. "I started the year at 30th.
"But with my ranking, I need to do better at Masters Series events and Grand Slam if I'm to improve. My best so far is two third rounds at the Australian Open and one at the US Open. That's not enough."
Tursonov, who is now based in California, had his own serve broken twice but paid the price for not taking his chances when they came along.
"I can get the jitters, and when that happens my game does not function well," said the third seed, who committed 20 unforced errors in the opening set.
"I have to go for my shots, and that gives me little margin for error. I didn't stay in the points for long enough today.
"If I had, he might have started making some more errors. But this is all about getting matches under your belt, preparing for the US Open."
