Mardy Fish ended a run of nearly two months without a win by toppling Alejandro Falla 6-2 6-2 at the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles.
The American sixth seed had lost his four previous first round marches - with his last win coming on June 11 against Australian Chris Guccione at the Queen's Club.
However Fish needed just over an hour to brush aside Falla and book his place in the second round.
Joining Fish in the next stage are French duo Marc Gicquel and Florent Serra.
Gicquel was too strong for Zack Fleishman as he rattled off a 6-3 6-0 win, while Serra overcame Andrey Golubev 6-4 6-1.
Denis Gremelmayr is also in the second round after the German put his Olympic disappointments behind him to beat Italian Fabio Fognini 6-4 6-2.
Gremelmayr was backed by the German tennis federation to take part in Beijing, only for the country's Olympic Committee to select Rainer Schuettler following his surprise Wimbledon semi-final.
The International Tennis Federation had attempted to block the move as Schuettler's ranking by the June 9 deadline - and before his Wimbledon run - was too low. However Schuettler was reinstated on Monday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
"It's not Rainer's fault, he played very well at Wimbledon," said Gremelmayr.
"He did play the semis, even if it was after the Olympic deadline.
"I guess the Olympic committee thought he had better chances than me. I've not spoken to Rainer but there is no point to complain."
