Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was the latest big name to crash out of the US Open as she was overcome in three sets by Katarina Srebotnik 6-3 6-7 (7-1) 6-3.

A day after Ana Ivanovic had succumbed to qualifier Julie Coin, third-seeded Kuznetsova was also on the end of an upset after two-hour, twenty-minute battle on the on Louis Armstrong Stadium court.

Srebotnik will now take on either Patty Schnyder of Switzerland or Magdalena Rybarikova in the fourth round - the further she has ever been at Flushing Meadows.

The Slovenian edged ahead, but it was Kuznetsova who appeared to have the momentum as she overpowered her opponent in the second set tie-break to level the match.

However, it was Srebotnik who continued to play the big points better and she sealed victory when Kuznetsova sent a forehand long, sinking to her knees to celebrate a memorable triumph.

Kuznetsova, who lost out in the final last year to Justine Henin conceded afterwards: "I didn't take advantage of her second serve. I was making too many mistakes."

Davenport beaten

Local favourite Lindsay Davenport also bit the dust on Friday as she was outplayed by former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli.

In a match interrupted by rain, the former world number one and 1998 champion struggled to get a foothold against the French 12th seed and ultimately tumbled to a convincing 6 -1 7-6 (7-3) defeat.

Bartoli broke her opponent in the fourth game and then ran away with the first set and looked to be on course for an express victory as she broke again in the first game of the second.

But Davenport, roared on by the crowd packed into the Arthur Ashe Stadium court, rallied to level at 5-5 and looked to have the momentum.

But having again thrown away her service game with a string of double-faults, it went to a tie-break where her service again let her down with Bartoli closing out victory in clinical style.

A disappointed Davenport stated afterwards: "That was my second set to win really, once it gets to 5-5. I kind of let it slip away.

"It's a shame that I couldn't have turned it around a little bit better in my favour.

"I gave myself a chance out there, but once my serve kind of left me, I felt like I didn't have a lot of confidence to go up after it and I think that translated into my groundies in the tiebreak."
