With Tropical Storm Hanna closing on the New York area, Andy Murray's US Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal was brought forward to a 5.30pm (BST) start.

The Scot's showdown with world number one Nadal had been scheduled to follow the other last-four contest between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

But, with organisers expecting inclement weather to arrive on Saturday evening, they decided to play both semi-finals simultaneously with Murray and Nadal shunted onto the Louis Armstrong Stadium - the second show court at Flushing Meadows.

Tropical Storm Hanna had moved up the east coast of America towards the New York area on Friday evening, where increased winds began to affect play during the women's semi-finals.

The forecast is for rain to arrive on Saturday evening, with the US National Weather Service forecasting between three and six inches of rain and flooding "across highly urbanised and poor drainage areas".

The start of play on Saturday in first of the men's semi-finals between Federer and Djokovic, which had been due to begin at midday local time, had already been brought forward to 11am Eastern time (4pm BST).

Saturday's women's singles final, which will feature world number two Jelena Jankovic, playing in her first grand slam final, and Serena Williams is scheduled to start at 7pm (12am BST).
