American Sam Querrey is back hitting balls again following a freak accident that could have spelled the end of a promising career.
The world number 25 narrowly avoided serious nerve damage in his serving arm when he fell through a glass table during the Thailand Open in September.
The 22-year-old required 25 stitches during surgery that lasted an hour, and he admitted it was some time before he felt it was possible to play tennis again.
"I fell through it," he said, recalling the incident. "When I got up, there was a piece of glass in my arm. Blood was gushing out. I ran down to the trainer. The doctor came and we got the ambulance and went to the hospital.
"I was actually more nervous when I got home and I finally took the splint off after two weeks. If my wrist moved in the slightest way, it would send shooting pain down my arm. I didn't know if I was going to get better."
He says his arm feels good, although the booming serve isn't quite where it was before the accident.
"My shoulder, it takes a while to warm it up and get that motion going," he said. "Other than that I feel no difference in any part of my game."
Querrey reached five ATP Tour finals during the course of the year, with his sole victory in Los Angeles boosted his ranking to a career-high of 22.
