Seeds Anabel Medina Garrigues and Lucie Safarova both fell at the first hurdle on the opening day of the Monterrey Open.

Sixth-seeded Garrigues crashed out in straight sets to Klara Zakopalova, going down 7-5 7-5.

And Safarova, seeded eighth, followed her out of the tournament despite winning the opening set against Julie Coin.

The French woman regrouped, though, to take secure a 5-7 6-4 6-4.

Aleksandra Wozniak ensured it wasn't a complete washout for the seeds as she was gifted her place in the second round.

The seventh-ranked Canadian was level Laura Granville at 3-3 in the first set when the American was forced to retire with an injury to her left wrist.

In the other first round game on the opening day, Vania King came from a set down to beat Sandra Zahlavova 4-6 7-5 6-3.
