Andy Roddick will play Mardy Fish for a place in the final of the Atlanta Tennis Championships after the top seed battled past Xavier Malisse on Friday.

The world number nine continued his unconvincing form at the hardcourt event before prevailing 4-6 6-3 6-4 against the Belgian.

Roddick, who was taken to a decider by fellow American Rajeev Ram in the last round, was forced to dig deep yet again after Malisse took the opening set.

Next up for the former world number one is a semi-final encounter with sixth-seeded compatriot Fish, who defeated another American, Taylor Dent, 6-3 6-0 in the day's late game.

Second-seeded American John Isner made much lighter work of his quarter-final clash as he powered past countryman Michael Russell 6-1 6-2 in just 56 minutes.

South Africa's Kevin Anderson awaits Isner in the last four after he posted a 6-3 6-4 win over Slovakia's Lukas Lacko.
