Date Krumm: Progresses to second round
Dinara Safina's miserable run of form continued as she was sent crashing out in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic by Kimiko Date Krumm.
The former world number one, who has slipped to 35 in the world rankings, suffered a 4-6 7-6 (7-0) 6-2 defeat to the veteran Japanese player.
Date Krumm also shocked Safina in the French Open and mounted a dramatic comeback in Stanford after the Russian had served for the match in the second set.
The 39-year-old veteran will face another Russian player - Elena Dementieva - in the second round of the tournament.
Elsewhere in the first round, number three seed Agnieszka Radwanska prevailed 7-5 4-6 6-3 in a tough contest against South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers.
