Nadal enjoys late show

Fist pump: Nadal

To be in quarter-finals of the US Open without losing a set and without losing a serve, two things must work really well: the concentration and the serve.

Rafael Nadal is three wins away from completing a career grand slam after demolishing fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the last 16 of the US Open.

Top seed Nadal, who has never reached the final at Flushing Meadows, needed just over two hours to claim a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win.

The result was never in much doubt from the moment he raced into a 3-0 lead at the start of the opening set.

A solitary break in each set was enough for the world number one to progress to a quarter-final meeting with another of his compatriots, Fernando Verdasco.

"I think I am playing well, but I am not playing yet at my highest level," said Nadal, who has yet to drop serve or a set in the tournament.

"I am playing better and better every day and I had to play a little bit better this match.

"To be in quarter-final of the US Open without losing a set and without losing a serve, two things must work really well: the concentration and the serve."

Backlog

Due to a backlog of matches that meant a delayed start, Nadal did not complete victory until the early hours of Wednesday morning.

But his opponent in the last eight on Thursday, Verdasco, is unlikely to be any fresher after having to dig his way out of a two-set hole to defeat yet another Spaniard, David Ferrer, in a deciding tie-break.

Verdasco, the eighth seed, eventually prevailed 5-7 6-7 (8-10) 6-3 6-3 7-6 (7-4) after a four-and-a-half hour war of attrition.

Nadal has won all 10 previous meetings between the pair, including a five-set epic in the semi-final of the 2009 Australian Open.

"Yeah, that was long, but I played in Australia five hours 15 minutes in semi-final, and I had to play the final one day later," Nadal noted.

"I was very tired, but I was ready. I think for sure he's gonna be ready."

From the way the Tournament is moving, a Rafa Vs Fed Final is now clear and am sure its going to be a cracker just like their Previous encounter in the Wimbledon Final. Both men need this Title to prove something.Rafa to complete his Cabinet collection and Fed to avenge the defeats he suffered under Rafa. This promises to be one of those Best Tennis Finals that can not be missed. Rafa, Complete the Year in style with a Win.

Go Rafa! But you should really attack the net more. Your back-hand slice always scares me, especially when you have to do it on the right-hand side. (look at me talking like a pro). Anywho, see you on Sunday against Federer.

What an awesome player Rafa is - his serve and game gets better with each match!. I have followed his career since he first popped on the scene - just hope he gets the one slam missing from his cabinet.
