Murray the master?

Murray: 2009 US Open champion?

Also see

After experiencing his first Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows last year, Andy Murray returns to Flushing Meadows expecting, rather than hoping, to mount another serious title charge.

His 6-2 7-5 6-2 defeat to five-time US Open champion Roger Federer was undoubtedly a learning curve, and with a 53-8 record behind him this season, Murray heads back to the scene of his defeat in buoyant mood.

But can anyone stop Federer? The Swiss ace has dominated the event for the last five years and shows absolutely no sign of letting the trophy out of his sight.

The world number one was in ruthless mood in Cincinnati, powering past both Murray and Novak Djokovic before clinching the title and sending another timely reminder to his rivals ahead of the New York showpiece.

However, since Murray's US Open final loss last summer, the 22-year-old has beaten Federer in four of their last five meetings - all of which have been on the concrete.

Wins in Madrid, Shanghai, Doha and Indian Wells saw the new world No.2 have the Indian Sign over Federer, however the 28-year-old bounced back with a 6-2 7-6 victory over his rival in Cincinnati.

So what do you all think... Can Murray can stop Federer's charge for an unprecedented sixth US Open singles title this year?

The Scotsman proved he has the hardcourt game by winning the US Open junior title in 2004, but can he handle the pressure at the latter stages of a Grand Slam?

Is Murray the only man who can stop Federer or will Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick also have a say in the destination of the singles title?

Or maybe an unseeded player will sneak through and take the event by storm?

Murray the Master ? you must be kidding. Everyone has been raving about him especially this Open, but he is yet to play a Seeded Player. To be honest I used to dislike him about the comment he made on England, but I also dislike his attitude on the court, screaming, swearing, hitting the ground with his racket or punching it. Also found it quite amusing that when he starts losing his ways or his opponent has a hot streak he suddendly needs a massage or has a cramp. He also cannot handle the stress in Grand Slams. Hopp Federer

Why are we always so negative about our sportsmen / sportswomen? The guy has the ability and proved it everywhere apart from a major . YET. His serve is his weakness, when he serves well not many would beat him, inc Raf n Fed. How many players can say they have beat Federer 4 of last 5 times they have played? How many can say they have beat Federer 4 times in their career? Rafa prob only other one in that category. I'll be supporting him all the way and hope he wins it to silence his critics. C'mon ANDY

Desperate for a win or not why would any brit slam the only good tennis player we have, as for having no chance, he is not the world number 2 for nothing, in 5 games with Federa he has one four, not a bad record for those who dont think he has what it takes. All the players in his draw he has beaten. everyone who knows anything about tennis say he can win. so for all you out there that dont like him becouse he's not like henman, not posh enough for a brit tennis player dont watch, yes he is rough round the edges, but he wins, Go Murry.

i am getting so fed up with people that think andy murray has no chance and overrated, the guy is not world number 2 for nothing. everyone keeps saying he wins small events but what about the masters he keeps winning. the guy is brill and too rate him along side Tim is a joke. most people dont have a clue about tennis and just watch it now and again and think they know everything. face the facts that murray has beaten fed 4 out of 5 and it dont matter if it's in a slam or not!! when fed himself says murray is the one to watch then you know murray is brill. at the end of the day anyone in my eyes who gets to number 2 in the world has the same chance to win as number 1 in every single event. Murray will be number 1 in the next few years!!!!

I will concede that Murray is playing exceptional tennis at times. Sadly though his whole attitude is so appalling that I have no desire to see him become #1 or win any tournament that such great sportsmen as Federer, Tsonga, Simon, Nadal, Djokovic and others, playing alongside him. Can you imagine Federer flashing his biceps at the crowd? ( oh sorry trainer?!) Reving up the crowd to fever pitch? No! Leaves me cold. I would rather watch paint dry.

Jonathan Thompson says...

Are we Brits that desperate that we have to pretend Andy Murray is a great tennis player? Surely not! He is quite clearly an overrated, spoilt, brooding wanna-be who looks as happy on court as Monty does on a golf course, embarrassing to watch him at times. He struts around as though he is a Tennis God. There are only two great mens players on the scene at the moment and we all know who they are. Andy Murray is light years behind, both in ability and tact.

Murray has no chance. He'll go out in the quarters. Fed to win with ease.

Debbie Watson says...

I think Andy has to improve his first serves, when he conquers this he will beat them all he has a great all round game and can hit some fantastic shots, he can now hit an ace when in trouble and never gives up. There are a lot of really good players out there but i think Andy is one of them, can he win the US open i think he is in with a good chance i will certainly be cheering him on.

Can anyone tell me why Nadal had a tough workout over someone higher ranked than Murrays opponent (he also went four sets)

Nick Wightwick says...

This year Federer has by far the easiest quarter (the only guy maybe capable of giving him a run is Blake on this surface) and he's got to be favourite, i don't see Rafa winning but not because of he's fitness but because of the surface and i see him getting blown off the court by my dark horse Tsonga who's a danger to anyone on this surface, Djokovic i dunno has a nice draw but he can't seem to get it together at the moment and i can't see him beating Fed in the semis and that's if he gets there, same goes for Roddick. Now Murray's side of the draw well he shouldn't have any problems until maybe the 4th round where he should face Cilic but Murray should have too much for him and would probably win in 4, next up is probably Del Potro and easily the hardest quarter final opponent possible, on this surface he's capable of beating anybody without too many problems but for him to beat Murray he needs to do it in 4 sets cos Murray will outlast him, so if he gets through that he should face the winner of a Rafa - Tsonga quarter final, and this is where i see him going out to either of them Murray could be out on he's feet for this match and it will be too much for him, so i just feel too many hard matches for Andy to take it's toll on him, Federer to finish off whoever is left standing in this half of the draw with minimum fuss

Llan Lerman says...

Murray has a great chance of winning here this year. He has a very similar draw to last year - Del Potro in the quarters and Nadal in the semis - both of whom he beat. He has recently played Federer and should have a decent gameplan. Secret is in his serve. If Andy' serves well, he can beat anybody. When those first serves go in, he wins like 3 out of every 4 points and it seems to fuel the rest of his game.

Andy will win Fed will be in there at the end but Andy is so strong this year I just know he will win. I will be there in front of the TV.

Alex Kent-braham says...

Murray is only 22 as you say but there have only been 4 men in the history of tennis who without winning a grand slam before the age of 23 have won one afterwards. they are all left- handed. Murray shouldn't be ranked number two in front of Nadal. Nadal was unfortunately injured, because of this Murray is suddenly better than Nadal?? NO Nadal is only 11 months older and yet he has 6 grand slams more than Murray. Do not even compare federer and murray its just not fair to murray. yes he has a small chance of winning like everyone else in the draw but federer and nadal both performs when it matters. Murray does not

sorry andy, roger is playing to well back to his best its his tournament to loose,i hope you play roger in the final,if you beat him you deserve the rewards, not a knighthood sporting knighthoods are ridiculous.

Michael Rossi says...

Don't get too excited. Del Potro is a very different player a year on, Nadal will improve as the tournament progresses & don't overlook Tsonga. Even IF Murray does make the final, he will then probably face a relaxed & motivated Federer..I certainly don't rate his chances. He had opportunities in Australia & Wimbledon & blew them.

David Smyth says...

The reason he is number two in the world is because he's winning the little tournament's that nadal and fed sit out so has no real challenge but soon as they come back like last week what happens ........Fed wins again and Andy is knocked out as for comment made about beatin fed 4 tmies out of 5 has he ever beaten him in a major?? eh NO and never will just have to face facts only time murrray might win a major is when both of the two big guns are missing other than that he'll get to semi's or Final and fall short as always.way to much hype for a average player!!!!!

Joel Langton says...

Murray is a good player, and has a great coaching team behind him. Over the winter he went away and worked on his weaknesses, he is now really strong and fit. In Wimbeldon i was disapointed with his serve, which was terrible. Since then he has improved that alot, though i do think it needs more work. If anyone is going to beat Federer it is Murray, but the fact is that Federer, is just an absolute machine. Even when he drops points, games, you can just see he is still in control, he knows he is going to win, and thats exactly what he does. This year it will be Federer. Next year, expect a stronger Murray, and i think he will be number 1 by this time next year.
