New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will not play again this season after he suffered a knee injury during his side's 17-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on the opening day of the NFL season.
Brady, last year's league MVP and a three-time Super Bowl winner, hobbled off mid-way through the first quarter after taking a hit from Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard.
"After extensive tests this morning, it was revealed that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's left knee, which was injured in the first quarter of yesterday's game, will require surgery," the team said in a statement.
"He will be placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the 2008 season."
Matt Cassel saw New England to victory by completing 13 of 18 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown after replacing Brady.
Cassel, who has never started an NFL game since being taken in the seventh round of the 2005 draft and was also a back-up throughout his college career at USC, now looks set for an extended run at the helm of the Patriots' offence.
