New York Giants star Plaxico Burress spent Friday night in hospital after being shot in his right thigh.
The wide receiver, 31, was released from hospital early on Saturday after what the Giants have termed an "apparent accidental shooting" thought to have been in a nightclub.
Burress injured a hamstring two weeks ago and had already been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins.
But the man who caught the winning pass in the Giants' 2008 Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots now looks set to face an extended spell on the sidelines.
A club statement said: "We are aware of the fact that Plaxico was involved in an apparent accidental shooting last night [Friday]. We have been in contact with Plaxico since shortly after the incident.
"He suffered a wound to his right thigh. Obviously, our primary concern is for Plaxico's health and well-being.
"We have been in touch with NFL security on this matter. At this point, we are attempting to gather all the facts surrounding this incident. This incident could become a matter for law enforcement officials, and because of that, we have no comment on any of the details."
Burress has 35 catches for 454 yards and four touchdowns so far this season, despite constantly drawing double coverage and is sure to be a big loss to the Giants team.
