The Indianapolis Colts have introduced Jim Caldwell as their new head coach, 24 hours after former boss Tony Dungy announced his retirement.

The 54-year-old had been an assistant at the Colts for the past six years and was also annointed Dungy' as his successor 12 months ago.

Caldwell takes over a franchise that has made the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons and has three-time league MVP Peyton Manning at quarterback.

Manning and Caldwell worked closely together when the latter acted as the Colts' quarterbacks coach between 2002 and 2004.

He also served as the assistant head coach/quarterbacks between 2005 and 2007.

Caldwell, who has never been head coach of an NFL franchise before, was appointed on a four-year contract.

"What a privilege it is to direct one of the great organizations in the National Football League," he said. "I commit that your team will continue to play fast, smart and physical."

"This day is about moving forward," Colts owner Jim Irsay added. "I couldn't be more excited about having Jim Caldwell as our new head coach."

Dungy announced his retirement at an emotional press conference on Monday.
