Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has become the highest paid defensive back in NFL history.

The 27-year-old Pro Bowler, who has been with the Raiders for six seasons, has re-signed for the club on a $45.3 million three-year deal.

Asomugha is guaranteed $28.5 million in the first two years of the contract, with an option for a third year in 2011, which would be worth either $16.8 million or the amount of the quarterback franchise tag, whichever is greater.

Former first-round draft pick from the University of California Asomugha has just 10 career interceptions to his name because Oakland's opponents rarely dare to throw to his side of the field.

The announcement comes just a day after the club re-signed All-Pro punter Shane Lechler to a four-year contract as Raiders owner Al Davis looks to tie down his key stars.

The move marks a change in policy by the Raiders after their sixth consecutive losing season.

Big free-agent signings like cornerback DeAngelo Hall and receiver Javon Walker in the last off-season failed to reap dividends and so Davis is now spending freely on his own proven players before the free agency period even opens.
