Darren Sproles has signed a one-year tender worth $6.62 million to stay with the San Diego Chargers.
The Chargers had placed the franchise tag on Sproles to prevent him becoming an unrestricted free agent.
The 25-year-old will now earn the average salary of the top five running backs in the league and becomes a free agent at the end of the season.
Sproles' deal is only slightly less than fellow Chargers rusher LaDainian Tomlinson, a five-time Pro Bowler who recently renegotiated his contract in order to stay with the club.
