The Buffalo Bills have placed Leodis McKelvin on season-ending injured reserve to make room on their roster for Marshawn Lynch.
Cornerback McKelvin suffered a broken leg during the Bills' 27-7 defeat to the New Orleans Saints last Sunday and there is no clear timescale for his recovery.
The decision to place McKelvin on injured reserve means he cannot return until next season.
Running back Lynch is available for the first time this season following suspension when Buffalo visit AFC East rivals the Miami Dolphins in week four.
Lynch, the 12th overall selection in the 2007 draft, served a three-game ban for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy - a breach related to his guilty plea on a misdemeanour gun charge last March.
He is expected to split carries against the Dolphins with Fred Jackson, who has led the Bills' running attack manfully with 298 rushing yards during the first three matches.
