Monday night's dramatic win against the New York Jets came at a price for the Miami Dolphins, as they lost running back and kick returner Patrick Cobbs for the rest of the season.
Cobbs was Miami's leading kick-off returner for the season and was also an important piece of their Wildcat formation which has been so successful over the last two seasons.
Cobbs scored on a 53-yard touchdown pass and a 44-yard run last season from the Wildcat package, which operates with three running backs, but will now miss the remainder of the campaign.
Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said that Cobbs was hurt on a fourth-quarter carry during Monday's dramatic 31-27 win over the Jets in Miami.
Tests have revealed that Cobbs has torn his anterior cruciate ligament, and will now be forced to sit out the rest of the NFL season.
"A tremendous, tremendous warrior," Sparano said of Cobbs. "But that's how this game goes."
Cobbs has six carries for 36 yards this season, along with three receptions for 23 yards, while he led the team on kick-off returns with an average of 22.6 yards on 16 attempts.
The injury for Cobbs means that rookie Lex Hilliard will now see more time behind lead running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, while quarterback Pat White may also get more action in the Wildcat.
Also in Miami, more news has emerged of yet more celebrity interest in acquiring a stake in the Dolphins as part of owner Stephen Ross' plans to extend the popularity of the team.
Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie has been approved by NFL owners at a meeting in Boston, and she will now be offered a deal to join the likes of the Williams sisters and Gloria Estefan as part-owners of the Dolphins.
