The return of Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders lasted just two weeks as he has now been ruled out for the rest of the season with a new injury.
Sanders only returned to action in week seven, but a torn biceps injury picked up last week against the San Francisco 49ers has ended his season prematurely.
It was a double blow for the Colts on Friday as cornerback Marlin Jackson was also ruled out for the remainder of the season after picking up an injury in training.
Talented safety Sanders missed all of pre-season and the first five regular season games after recovering from knee surgery, but came back in week seven.
However, Sanders tore a biceps tendon in last week's win over the 49ers and after consulting a surgeon it was deemed necessary to operate, which has ended his season early.
The Colts have not released the details of Jackson's injury, which was picked up in practice, but it is thought to be a knee ligament injury that sees him out for the season.
A further worry for Indianapolis is that third-year receiver Anthony Gonzalez has been forced to have arthroscopic surgery on his knee after suffering a setback.
Gonzalez has been missing since injuring his knee in the season opener, but was expected to return imminently after getting back to practice.
However, a setback in practice has resulted in an operation to clean up his knee, and he is now a further three weeks away from getting back on the field.
Sanders will be the big blow to the Colts though, who are a perfect 7-0 so far this term ahead of Sunday's visit of Houston.
With two spots open on their roster, the Colts have signed veteran defensive end Josh Thomas, who played 68 games for the team between 2004-08, and tight end Tom Santi who had been on the practice squad.
