Chicago's Jay Cutler had a night to forget as he was intercepted five times as the Bears crashed to a 10-6 defeat to San Francisco.

Cutler, who joined the Bears in the off-season in a trade from Denver, became the first Chicago quarterback to throw at least four interceptions in two different games since the 1962 season.

And having thrown a league-high 17 interceptions, Cutler shouldered the blame for the loss.

"I have to apologise to our defence," he said. "They kept us in the game even with all the turnovers.

"We had a lot of stuff going it just didn't work out. I have to lead better."

Cutler saw a chance to redeem himself disappear with less than 10 seconds left when San Francisco safety Michael Lewis intercepted in the endzone.

Relief

That summed up the night for the offence of both teams, with San Francisco running back Frank Gore scoring the only touchdown of the night in the second quarter.

Gore ran for 104 yards, while 49ers QB Alex Smith managed only 118 yards and was intercepted just once.

Joe Nedney slotted over a 21-yard field goal for the home side, with Robbie Gould landing field goals from 50 and 38 yards to keep the Bears in touch.

The win ended San Francisco's four-game losing run, with tight end Vernon Davis admitted it was good to win again.

"It was a big relief," said Davis. "It's truly a blessing to be able to get this. We just have to keep winning."
