Dale Steyn has joined Muttiah Muralitharan at the top of the International Cricket Council'sTest bowling rankings after a string of impressive performances.

The South African paceman took eight wickets to bowl the Proteas to an innings victory in the second Test against India at the weekend.

He has claimed 66 wickets in his last nine Test matches including 12 in the current series, which South Africa lead 1-0 after the first match was drawn.

Having taken a total of 117 wickets in 22 matches, Steyn is firmly on course for his fourth consecutive man-of-the-series award.

Australia batsman Mike Hussey has replaced Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara as the top-ranked Test batsman.

Sangakkara slipped to fourth, behind Australian skipper Ricky Ponting and South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis.
