Andrew Strauss hit a century as Middlesex beat Surrey on the Duckworth/Lewis method at the Oval, while there were two centuries as Essex beat Kent by 31 runs in the other FP Trophy South East game.

Strauss hit a belting 163 which included 23 fours and four sixes, while Owais Shah added an unbeaten 55 as Middlesex powered on an impressive 315-6.

The Brown Caps always looked like struggling in the response, and with Gareth Berg taking four wickets to spearhead the Middlesex attack the hosts struggled.

Opener Scott Newman did hit 65 and surprise signing Chris Lewis entertained late on as the veteran made 33 from 30 balls.

But, with a rain playing a part, Surrey fell 58 runs short of their revised Duckworth/Lewis target as the were bowled out for 248.

Century stars

Essex skipper Mark Pettini hit 199 and Ravi Bopara fell agonisingly on 99 as they made 317-5 at Canterbury against Kent.

The hosts answered with Martin van Jaarsveld hitting a fine 124 but he could not find any other sizeable contributers as Kent ended on 286-9 from the 50 overs and 31 runs behind.

Pettini and Bopara put on a huge stand of 181 for the third Essex wicket before Bopara went just a run short of his century with the score on 207-2.

Pettini then added 54 for the fourth wicket alongside Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster and Tim Phillips a further 48 for good measure as the visitors made an imposing total of 317-5.

Van Jaarsveld's superb 124 came off just balls 93 balls and included 11 fours and three sixes, but still it was not enough for Kent.

Matthew Walker (33) and Azar mahmood (30) hung around long enough to add fifty partnerships with with Van Jaarsveld, but in the end they ran out of overs and Essex won by 31 runs.
