Gayle: groin injury

West Indies captain Chris Gayle requires groin surgery and is unlikely to appear in the Indian Premier League.

Gayle, 28, was advised of the need for an operation after having a MRI scan on the injury in Kolkata on Monday.

The opening batsman is signed up to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, but has yet to make an appearance for the franchise.

Gayle is awaiting approval from the West Indies Cricket Board before he can go under the knife.

The aim is to get him fit for West Indies' conditioning camp, beginning on May 17, ahead of three Tests and five one-dayers against Australia.
