Broad: jumped at the chance

Stuart Broad admitted day three of the third Test could not have gone any better for England after New Zealand reached the close still needing 64 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

The Nottinghamshire bowler took two wickets at Trent Bridge as the visitors were reduced to 177-5 in their second innings, the Black Caps having been forced to follow on after earlier being bowled out for 123.

Broad told Sky Sports News: "We were aiming to knock them over this morning.

"The ball swung nicely for us which was pleasing and when we could force them into the follow-on we jumped at the chance."

James Anderson took career-best figures of 7-43 but was denied the chance to claim all 10 wickets in the first innings when Ryan Sidebottom struck shortly after a delayed 1.40pm start.

Sidebottom also claimed two in the second innings and Broad registered a double in each as they backed up the in-form Anderson.

"We chatted this morning and basically said we had to get the four wicket whichever way we could," Broad continued. "Jimmy bowled fantastically well throughout the whole Test and I am sure he's not too disappointed with seven.

"Conditions at Trent Bridge have suited our style of attack really.

"Jimmy is so dangerous when it swings and we know what Siddy is like all the time.

"We're gelling as a unit and if it's someone's off-day someone else puts their hands up. The whole thing about a unit is supporting."

Disappointment

New Zealand's Brendon McCullum did not hide his disappointment as England closed in on a 2-0 series victory.

McCullum, who was out for 71 shortly before the end of play, said: "I am hugely disappointed, it would have been nice to get in with only three wickets down.

"But it wasn't to be - they bowled well all day and their wickets in the end were probably deserved."

McCullum had to forgo his usual swashbuckling style due to the helpful cloud cover but nevertheless shared a 94-run stand with Daniel Flynn (49).

"I was hoping there would be more reward for the application I showed," he continued.

"Hopefully this innings will make me a better player in the future, though.

"As soon as you get that cloud cover it's pretty tough out there.

"It's what the ball is doing in the air that makes it pretty tough.

"Jimmy Anderson has bowled brilliantly. He's been a real threat throughout.

"When you've got the ability to swing it both ways like he does you're always going to be a threat.

"And I would say it's the best they have bowled right through the summer barring Ryan Sidebottom at times in New Zealand."
