Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon is confident that Michael Vaughan will be fit to face South Africa in next week's first Test.

The England captain was forced to miss the final session of this week's Championship game against Durham after his troublesome right knee flared up during the game.

Vaughan will not play before the start of Thursday's Lord's opener.

Moxon told Sky Sports News: "It was a little bit sore on Tuesday but I would imagine that with over a week's rest it should be fine for the Test.

"I think it is just, obviously the operation he has had on his knee and he has played a reasonable amount of cricket this season so far, so it is just telling him he just needs to slow down a little bit. I guess it's fortunate from an England point of view he can have a bit of a rest."

Moxon reckons England will need Vaughan to be fit and firing for what promises to be a fiercely competitive Test series.

He added: "It is going to be a tough Test series against South Africa so England are going to have to be at their best to beat them. Vaughany is a key member of that side, obviously, so he will need to be 100 per cent fit."
