Jim Troughton completed his first Championship century of the season as Warwickshire played for bonus points on the last day of a drawn match with Northamptonshire at Edgbaston.

The 29-year-old left-hander was dropped in the first over of the morning session and batted through a rain-interrupted day to secure three extra points with his unbeaten 138 from 244 balls in a total of 353 for four.

Warwickshire are now 17 points behind Division Two leaders Worcestershire and remain six ahead of Northamptonshire but have a game in hand on their two closest rivals for promotion.

Troughton's early let-off shaped the Sunday stalemate at Edgbaston. Resuming on 120 for three, Warwickshire still needed 138 to make sure of avoiding the follow-on when Rob White put down the chance at second slip from David Lucas's fourth delivery.

The batsman was on 15 at the time and stayed to put his side in safe territory in a partnership of 149 with Jonathan Trott, who made 65 to confirm his position as Warwickshire's leading Championship scorer with 775 runs at 55.35.

After completing his first hundred since June last year, Troughton increased his tempo and finished with 17 fours, as well as the six off Jason Brown, after an undefeated stand of 120 with Tony Frost, who made 42 not out.

Day Three

Day three of Warwickshire's LV County Championship match against Northamptonshire at Edgbaston was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Persistent rain left umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Graham Burgess with no alternative but to call play off for the day following a 1.15pm inspection.

As only six points separate the two sides, there is unlikely to be any agreement between the captains to produce a positive result.

Sunday's final day is therefore expected to be a battle for bonus points on a dry and turning pitch.

Day two

Veteran all-rounder Lance Klusener's quickfire 83 helped Northamptonshire to five batting points as they took charge against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

The former South Africa star hit 12 fours during his 111-ball innings and then dismissed Ian Westwood (30) as the hosts closed on 120 for three in response to 407 for eight declared on a slow pitch.

At stumps, Warwickshire trailed by 287 with seven wickets intact but had struggled to combat fast bowler Johan van der Wath and the nagging accuracy of left-arm spinner Nick Boje.

Klusener, top of Northamptonshire's batting averages, made his ninth championship half-century of the summer alongside a hundred against Derbyshire at Chesterfield.

After his dismissal, he began his personal retribution by trapping Westwood leg-before with a low full toss that meant Warwickshire had stumbled from 78 for one - with the dismissal of Navdeep Poonia, caught off the splice in the gully - to 84 for three.

The target of 257 to avoid the follow on seemed distant. Maddy had been caught at slip off the bowling off Boje from a ricochet and it

was left to Jonathan Trott and Jim Troughton, both on nought, to rebuild the innings.

They made a successful start, adding 36 in 18 overs, when bad light ended play, despite spinners Boje and Jason Brown operating together.

Day One

Northamptonshire batted solidly to put themselves in a strong position after a rain-affected first day against Wawrickshire at Edgbaston.

After winning the toss, the visitors were strongly-placed at 292 for five when heavy rain arrived to wipe out the day's last 24 overs.

Northants' only regret against an innocuous-looking bowling attack was that, while four of their top five reached 48, none went on to play a really big

innings. All perished carelessly before they reached 75.

Niall O'Brien (48) and Stephen Peters (50) put on 96 in 29 overs but both fell in the final 10 minutes before lunch.

Ian Salisbury, who had removed both O'Brien and Peters, took the wicket of David Sales in the sixth over after lunch, but Rob White and Rikki Wessels came to the visitors' aid as they added 83 in 19 overs.

However, once again Northants lost two quick wickets, with White (73) becoming Salisbury's fourth victim and Wessels (61) holing out to Navdeep Poonia off Neil Carter.

Lance Klusener and Nicky Boje then added 32 before the deluge arrived.
