Sussex 265 (A J Hodd 81, C D Nash 78, A U Rashid 4-56) v Yorkshire 133-7

Yorkshire's match with Sussex at Scarborough was abandoned an hour before the scheduled start on Saturday after more overnight rain.

With large pools of standing water on the outfield, umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Steve Garratt made their decision after Sussex's director of cricket Mark Robinson enquried whether Yorkshire would have been permitted to declare on their 133 for seven if play had been able to start late in the day.

That scenario would have denied the visitors the possibility of a third bowling bonus point and, if that had been the case, Robinson felt there was little point waiting around with the little prospects of play.

"It was a hypothetical situation but had it occurred then we would have had to

mention it in our report," Garratt stated.

The result does little to ease Yorkshire's relegation worries. They are without a Championship match next week, but then return to Scarborough for their final home game against Somerset before finishing the season by taking on Sussex again at Hove.

Day Three

Yorkshire's hopes of avoiding relegation suffered a blow when day three of their clash with Sussex was washed out at Scaborough.

The North Marine Road ground was waterlogged by mid-morning, leaving umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Steve Garratt with an easy decision to call off play for the day.

With the conditions already poor and the wet weather set to continue into day four, it is possible that there will be no more action in the game at all.

Yorkshire, who slumped to 133-7 in reply to Sussex's first innings total of 265, are in desperate need for points as they battle to beat the drop to Division Two.

The Tykes look likely to need at least one win one from their two remaining fixtures, the first of which is at home to title-chasing Somerset at Scarborough before they face Sussex again at Hove.

Day Two

Former England captain Michael Vaughan failed with the bat once again as Yorkshire struggled on another rain-hit day of their County Championship match against Sussex at Scarborough.

Vaughan, who is still hopeful of playing his way onto the winter tour of India, made just 19 before nicking a delivery from Jason Lewry, giving wicketkeeper Andy Hodd the chance to take a diving catch.

A lengthy rain delay followed, costing 26 overs, and when play resumed Yorkshire lost more quick wickets leaving them on 133-7, still 132 adrift of Surrey's first innings total.

Sussex had resumed on 203-4 but Adil Rashid claimed two wickets in two balls, trapping Hodd lbw for 81 and then having Robin Martin-Jenkins caught at first slip.

Ollie Rayner kept out the hat-trick ball but the Sussex slump continued with Carl Hopkinson falling lbw to Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Sussex debutant paceman, Mohammad Sami, departing in similar manner to Rashid.

A freak run-out accounted for Corey Collymore whose leading edge off Rashid struck Adam Lyth on the leg at silly point and the ball ricocheted into the stumps with the batsman out of his ground.

When last man Lewry was comprehensively bowled by Rana it meant Sussex's last six wickets had toppled while 38 were being added in 13 overs.

Day One

Sussex made a good start to their LV County Championship match at Scarborough before stand-in seamer Steven Patterson reined them back to 203-4.

Patterson, in just his third outing of the summer, is likely to move aside when Tim Bresnan returns from England duty on Friday, but took the wickets of opener Mike Yardy (26) and the prolific Murray Goodwin (25) after the visitors opted to bat first on a good track.

Yardy and Chris Nash successfully saw off the new ball but Patterson was brought into the attack and removed the former, who edged to 'keeper Gerard Brophy.

Nash calmly moved to his half-century in 69 balls and he was joined by Andy Hodd as the pair reached lunch at 106 for one.

Despite a couple of streaky boundaries, Hodd also made fifty as Sussex looked in control at 150 for one, but the partnership was broken when Nash clipped Matthew Hoggard to Michael Vaughan at mid-wicket.

Patterson nipped one back at Goodwin to take out off stump and leg-spinner Adil Rashid prised out skipper Chris Adams, caught close in by Jaques Rudolph, as Sussex passed the 200 mark.

However, with Hodd having made a patient 66 not out the rain came down before tea and play was abandoned for the day soon after.
