Pakistan beat hosts Canada by 35 runs on the opening day of the quadrangular Twenty20 tournament in Toronto.

Salman Butt smashed 74 from 56 balls to lead Pakistan to a total of 137-7 from their 20-over allocation.

And that proved enough as Shoaib Akhtar (2-11), Sohail Tanvir (2-29) and skipper Shoaib Malik (2-26) each took two wickets to restrict Canada to 102-9.

Sri Lanka had earlier beaten Zimbabwe by five wickets in the opening game of the competition.

In a match reduced to 17 overs per side, Zimbabwe could muster only 106-8 after being asked to bat.

Tatenda Taibu top scored with 45, while spinner Ajantha Mendis claimed 3-15.

Sri Lanka recovered from 77-5 to overhaul their target with six balls to spare.

Chamara Kapugedera (18no) and Farveez Maharoof (13no) shared an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 30 to see their side home.
