The England and Wales Cricket Board failed to reach an agreement with their Indian counterparts over the release of players for the Indian Premier League during a meeting in Mumbai.

David Collier and Giles Clarke, the chief executive and chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, spent the two days locked in talks with India's Lalit Modi over a number of issues.

They were hopeful of coming to a reciprocal agreement with Modi over the release of England players for next year's IPL Twenty20 tournament, which is due to be staged between April 10 and May 29, in return for Indian players being made available for the 2010 English Premier League.

But after what was described by a spokesman as "constructive" talks, the discussions have broken up without any agreement being reached although the two parties have agreed to meet again in the next two or three weeks in India for further negotiations.

Among the topics covered at the meeting was the future of the Champions League competition, which is due to begin later this month, and whether English teams could feature after Kent were barred from entry despite reaching the final of the Twenty20 Cup because they fielded players from the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League.

The make-up of future series between India and England was discussed and how they would fit into the ICC's future tours programme.
