Glamorgan have announced the signing of South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs for the 2009 season.

The 34-year-old, who was recently axed by South Africa and told to attend a rehabilitation clinic after defying a curfew, will return to the SWALEC Stadium after playing for the county in this year's Twenty20 Cup.

"I'm really excited about returning to Glamorgan, joining the team for the Twenty20 Cup last season was a great experience," said Gibbs, who will replace Jason Gillespie are Glamorgan's overseas player.

"I am looking forward to having more time over the summer to play with Glamorgan and hopefully helping the team progress in their 2009 campaign."

Glamorgan's cricket manager, Matthew Maynard said: "I am absolutely delighted about Herschelle returning to the club, he made a great impression on the team in 2008 and he is an inspirational player to add to the squad.

"Herschelle is a typical example of the cricketing experience that we are looking to sign to the club and I'm thrilled that he is joining us next season."

Gibbs is a vastly experienced and hugely gifted international star, scoring over 12,000 runs in 90 Tests at an average of 41, and 9,000 ODI runs at 36.
