Mitchell Johnson claimed his first five-wicket haul in Tests as Australia completed a comprehensive victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Brisbane.

Resuming on 143 for six still needing 184 for victory, the Kiwis slumped to 177 all out with Johnson finishing with figures of five for 39, taking his tally to nine in the match.

The left-armer was backed up by Stuart Clark, who claimed four for 43 as they broke down the Black Caps' resistance.

Ross Taylor and Daniel Vettori got through the first half an hour until Johnson struck, Andrew Symonds taking a fine one-handed catch in the gully after Vettori threw the bat at a wide ball.

Johnson removed Taylor in his next over when the last recognised batsman had reached 75, edging an angled delivery to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.

Clark swiftly removed Iain O'Brien with a slower ball before renowned hitter Tim Southee hurt Clark's figures with a couple of huge sixes.

But Johnson ended his fun when he bowled Chris Martin at the other end to complete his five-for - and with it the man of the match award.
