India will play three Tests instead of two on their tour of New Zealand in March and April if the Indian cricket board's request is granted.

As it currently stands, India's tour starts on March 6th and will consist of two Test matches, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 match.

Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrator of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has already sent a request.

He told The Associated Press: "The proposal to play an additional Test match has been sent to New Zealand Cricket, which will be responding to it soon."

The Indian team has been left short of matches after their tour to Pakistan in January and February was cancelled as a result of strained political tensions.

The Indian board is looking for more games as its commercial revenue is linked to the number of games the team plays.
