Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim have been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for excessive appealing in Bangladesh's second Test defeat to Sri Lanka.

Skipper Ashraful was docked 15 per cent of his match fee for excessive appealing, while Rahim lost 50 per cent of his for "charging or advancing towards the umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing."

Match referee Jeff Crowe handed down the penalties in Chittagong on Tuesday after the conclusion of second and final Test, which the tourists won by 465 runs to complete a 2-0 series whitewash.

Both charges relate to an incident after the first ball of the 78th over of Sri Lanka's second innings when Rahim's appeal for a catch behind against Sri Lanka batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan was turned down.

"Mohammad Ashraful is the captain of the team and needs to lead with responsibility and patience when an umpire is making a decision," Crowe said.

"Having spoken to him earlier in the series about a similar reaction, he was fully aware of what was acceptable and therefore, pleaded guilty to the charge."

There is no time for Ashraful and his charges to dwell on the defeat though as they take part in a tri-nation tournament with Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, starting in Mirpur on Saturday.
