Wright: playing down Flintoff comparisons

He's (Flintoff) 6ft 6in and bowls at 95 miles per hour and I'm under six foot and probably bowl 85(mph).

Luke Wright has played down comparisons with Andrew Flintoff insisting he sees few similarities between his game and that of the Lancashire all-rounder.

With Flintoff having announced his retirement from the Test arena, Wright has been put forward as one of the candidates to fill his all-rounder role within the England team.

Indeed, on Wednesday former captain Michael Vaughan suggested Wright as the ideal man to help compensate for the loss of Flintoff.

However, while acknowledging their both perform as all-rounders, Wright insisted there were few other comparisons to be drawn between the two and claimed he was looking instead to concentrate on his own strengths.

"Obviously you aspire to do what he's achieved, he was a world-class player and will hopefully continue to be so when he comes back," stated the Sussex man.

"But, for me, apart from the all-rounder role, there is no real comparison.

"He's 6ft 6in and bowls at 95 miles per hour and I'm under six foot and probably bowl 85(mph).

"So to compare it is not something I look to do - I'll let other people do it.

"I just look to do things the way I can and hopefully I can achieve as much as he has in the game, but in my own way."

Promising start

Wright has rather failed to build on a hugely promising start for England after bursting on to the international scene with a swashbuckling one-day half-century against India in 2007, managing only one further 50 in 25 subsequent one-dayers.

But his recent form has seen him force his way into the Test picture also and he is now pushing for a spot in the forthcoming Test series with South Africa.

"I enjoy my role and love where I'm batting," he continued. "I've always said that I don't mind where I bat as long as I play.

"But it's nice to be playing that all-rounder role, I'm batting sort of seven and still getting a good bowl.

"That's what I've always looked to do. I want to be doing the full role, so I'm happy."
