James Anderson's maiden one-day international five-wicket haul against South Africa in Port Elizabeth was performed with a broken toe.

The toe on his left foot was left horribly bruised when he clumsily careered into a chair.

Anderson was in scintillating form against South Africa with 5-23 from 10 overs, helping to inflict South Africa to their lowest one-day total on home soil.

The result gives England a 2-1 lead going into the final ODI at Durban - and despite the injury, Anderson's inclusion in no doubt.

England coach Andy Flower said: "He had to have some sort of anaesthetic on it before he played, so he did very well.

Improving

"He'll be fine. The doctor's had a look at it and he's not even going to x-ray it - because he says, 'Look, if it's got a crack in it there's nothing much we can do anyway'."

Although Anderson has struggled of late with a dodgy knee, Flower declared that the niggle is gradually clearing.

"His knee is improving a lot - and he looks to be getting closer to full fitness," he added.
