Warne hits out at Strauss

Warne: Backing Carberry to shine

It's disappointing that the captain of England decides to have a rest from a Test series, I can't comprehend that. Any time you represent your country it's special and I cannot understand how you can rest your captain

Shane Warne believes Andrew Strauss is showing "a lack of respect for Test cricket" by missing England's tour of Bangladesh.

Opener Strauss has been rested for the for the two-match series, as well as the three one-dayers against the Tigers, with one eye on a busy year ahead.

However Warne feels Strauss is wrong to be missing the trip, reasoning that playing Test cricket for your country is "special".

The former Australia leg-spinner also feels it will not make life easy for the England team, who will be led instead by vice-captain Alastair Cook.

Respect

"I hope they are not taking Bangladesh too easy because they can be quite strong," said the leg-spinner.

"What if they win the first Test? Does Strauss fly out for the second? I hope it's not the start of a trend. It's a lack of respect for Test cricket.

"It's disappointing that the captain of England decides to have a rest from a Test series, I can't comprehend that. Any time you represent your country it's special and I cannot understand how you can rest your captain.

"Maybe a one-day game because you play 40 or 50 a year but you only play eight Test matches a year. It's special.

"He's got a style of captaincy and a new skipper can't be Andrew Strauss, he'll do it his way. So suddenly the players think 'how are we going to play under Alastair Cook?"'

Warne is hoping the decision to leave Strauss at home will open the door for his former Hampshire team-mate Michael Carberry.

"I hope he gets the nod and peels off a couple of hundreds," he added.

"Then what are they going to do? Leave Andrew Strauss out? Michael is a wonderful player and I had a lot to do with him down at Hampshire where I was his captain for a few years.

"I saw a lot of good qualities and he just got better and better."

All this "showing lack of respect for bangladesh" is nonsense. They are ranked the lowest of all test nations fact. So if he feels that he can rest and get ready for a big year so be it. I would rather him be fit and focused on pakistan and the aussies than bangladesh and to be honest i would leave out collingwood and broad as well. These guys are going to play a big part in the future of english cricket but rest them and lets look at some younger talent. Its not dis respectful its common sense. Oh and chris g i agree with all you put ponting is always bunking out of games

The pre-Ashes mind games are starting early this year, LoL. Good ole'Warnie's gotta be beside himself as is the rest of the Aussie cricket world that they lost yet another Ashes series in England. Using Warnes logic here, then MS Dhoni has disrespected Test cricket ( I didn't see him playing in their recent Bang tour, Sehwag was Capt.), and his beloved Ricky Ponting continuosly disrespects ODI cricket by being rested after Test series and Clarke running the ODi team for either the series or half the matches. My biggest concern going forward in Test cricket and England is that we do not have a true pace bowler and we will not win many matches let alon series with the bowling line-up used in South Africa. Sure we'll win a match here and there but after the first match the oppossing batsmen have our bowlers figured out and have no fear, especially on flat pitches. There has to be a bowler in England who can consistently hit 90mph? without one we'll lose series to all of the top 6 teams.

Strauss has not only showed disrespect to test cricket but also to Bangladesh. If this was a tour to Austarlia or New Zealand I doubt that he would have rested. This is sadly a smack of subtle racism - "I will no play against a country thats weaker than my country and is not white." It is sad.

oh cut me some slack. Strauss did not make the decission to rest himself. He did not say "I'm tired so I'm not playing" the selectors picked the side. Therefore if you have a problem, blame them. We find it so easy to hail our players when they're doing well, but we jump right on their backs the moment they do anything that we wouldn't. Its just unfair. Take the pressure off your country representatives please

England have played a lot more than 8 tests within the last 12 months, usually around 12 a year. If you're going to knock someone publicly - get your facts straight mate.

Yip Warnie this is so tippical of English Cricket!!! They might as well leave Strauss @ home for the Tour Down Under. Let him rest on his couch @ home while his team mates face the fury off Australia later this year. What a joke!!!!

Well siad, Warnie! This Prima Donna attiude is prolific in the Eng team ( in all England teams) and needs to be stamped out. NOBODY is bigger than the game.

I think Warne is right.. If I am not wrong just few months back the English media was all over West Indies Captain Chris Gayle not showing respect to test cricket. They criticized Gayle for turning up for the tour just two days before the test... Now Strauss is not even touring Bangladesh. I dont see half that much criticism from English Media. In fact, some people are asking Warne to mind his own business... Was it not suppose to be the case with former English Cricketers who criticized Chris Gayle. Hypocrites.

Warney is spot on with his comments. Lord Strauss has shown a lack of respect for the Bangladeshis, as well as hiding behind the reason of fatigue. Just not cricket - young man !
