New Zealand have named Peter Ingram in their squad for the tri-series with Sri Lanka and India after opener Jesse Ryder was ruled out through injury.

Ryder has suffered an elbow injury and although Aaron Redmond was the coach Mark Greatbatch's first choice to come in, the flamboyant batsman is currently unavailable for selection.

That means Ingram, who scored a half-century on ODI debut against Bangladesh earlier this year, now gets his chance.

"We considered a few players but felt that an experienced opener was required so Ingram got the nod," said Greatbatch.

"Aaron Redmond was in contention but was unavailable due to his wedding overseas and that opened the door for Ingram.

"Ingram played in our last ODI series against Australia at home and we were looking for top-order cover so he was the natural choice."
