Kevin Pietersen has apologised for his foul-mouthed response to being left out of England's T20 and one-day squads.

Pietersen broke news of the selectors' decision ahead of the official announcement by posting a message on his Twitter page.

The tweet, which was deleted within minutes, read: "Done for rest of summer!! Man of the World Cup T20 and dropped from the T20 side too.. Its [sic] a **** up!!"

Pietersen will now play the remainder of the season at Surrey as he attempts to win back his place in the England squad after the ECB brokered a loan deal between the London outfit and the batsman's parent county, Hampshire.

The South African-born batsman admitted he published the message by mistake and apologised for his comments ahead of his Surrey debut against Worcestershire on Wednesday.

"It came out in the way that I didn't want it to come out," Pietersen told Surrey TV.

"It was something that wasn't meant for the public domain and I apologise for it entering the public domain and I also want to apologise for the language I used."

Criticism

The 30-year-old went on to say that he had apologised to a number of figures within the England hierarchy about the tweet, which drew criticism from senior figures within the game including former England skipper Michael Vaughan.

"It was a mistake that the tweet went out there," Pietersen continued.

"It wasn't anything against the England selectors or the England set-up.

"I was pretty upset about my own form and frustrated about it too.

"I have spoken to the coach (Andy Flower) T20 captain (Paul Collingwood) chair of selectors (Miller) and the managing director of English cricket (Hugh Morris) and they all totally understand so it's onwards and upwards from now and I'm looking forward to the next two weeks here."

A dazzling performance in England's victorious ICC World Twenty20 campaign aside, Pietersen has toiled with the bat on home soil this summer with an unconvincing 80 in the second Test against Pakistan being his only notable score.

A series of good innings in the county's four remaining fixtures will go some way towards repairing Pietersen's fragile confidence, which he admitted earlier this summer had been "battered" after he stepped down as England captain in January 2009 following a row with then coach Peter Moores.

Pietersen has failed to notch three figures in any form of the game since his resignation and will take time to readjust to the domestic game given that he has played only 11 county games in the last four years.

He is grateful to Surrey for giving him a chance to rebuild his form and admitted that he understood the selectors' decision.

"Any opportunity to spend some time in the middle is opportunity that I had to grab with both hands so I'm looking forward to it," said Pietersen, whose last 12 months have also been hampered by thigh and Achilles injuries.

"It's understandable that the selectors would like me to play some four-day games because the only first class cricket I have played since my Achilles injury has been in Test matches and it's pretty difficult to play Test matches if you are not at the top of your game.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for me to get back into nick.

"Hopefully I will be able to get five or six, seven knocks in the next two weeks and sort myself out for what will be an exciting winter."

Matter closed

National selector Geoff Miller, meanwhile, said he had drawn a line under the matter after discussing it with Pietersen.

"I've had a chat with Kevin. He explained the situation. I'm not too au fait with Twitter, but he explained what had happened and an apology was forthcoming," Miller told Sky Sports News.

"As far as I'm concerned, the matter is now closed. There are certain things I did not enjoy and I let him know those and now we will move on.

"I've had a private and personal conversation with the player.

"We all make errors and we accept that," he added.

"There's nobody in the world that's ever done anything absolutely perfect.

"There were a couple of things I didn't enjoy in it but we talked and the matter is closed and now we will get on with cricket."

The comments that i make will be my opinion and if others dont like it tough........ Pieterson once was a great cricketer but like all of them (Ian Botham apart) it went to his head. He should never have played for the England side in the first place as he is South African. He only came here to play for England as he was not good enough for his native country at the time and instead of waiting his massive ego decided he had to leave for English Shores. Good ridance to you going to Surrey you never played for Hampshire anyway and that sums up why Surrey as a county are seriously in decline (look at your youth policy, not just Egos and public School boys look at the state school kids also they are far more loyal and better talents)..... So see you later Mr Pieterson now go back home and play your cricket there England dont need you any longer.

Neil Collinson says...

we play too much cricket as a nation, for gods sake our top cricketers like kp never really get chance to play first class cricket like our footballers play prem.Lets have a rethink and not slate players with real quality like kp and colly and see in the long term how we can enhance their talent, lets not forget players who we think are on the top of their form in county class cricket, for their country sometimes dip their toe in the water in and think i cant handle this, please lets support our real quality players not rebuff them because they have lost a bit of form.

Kevin Pietersen is one of our best imports/investments in recent years in all forms of the game. His record and key performances in such a short timescale are quite outstanding. There are a few other England players who have performed badly in the Test series against a talented attack in bowler friendly conditions, yet will keep their places in T20/50 Overs. Who can forget KP''s destruction of SA or stuffing the Aussies TWICE in the Ashes. The man has both talent and bottle when it gets tough!! The ECB need to keep faith with him, not drop him as he is the one player the Aussies most fear in the Ashes and want to dismiss. Let him get some practice against Pakistan, not for Surrey "on loan" in the Championship on a flat track against an average attack! Wake up Andy Flower and Geoff Miller and manage the problem yourselves, not pass it to Surrey or KP in the wrong environment. Afridi and Pakistan will likely have a point to prove after recent events and KP would be first on my list of 11 to stop them beating us!!

Leave Kevin alone and concentrate on catching match fixers. His crime is so minor and hurt no one but himself.

Graham Carter says...

Kevin needs to grow up, and start concentrating on cricket again.......he needs to take a step back and look at his style of play when he burst onto the scene....he should also look at Mr Trotts game, as he is playing just how Kevin used to....Movement around the crease, not allowing the bowler to settle. I''m not sad to see him leave Hampshire, even though he''s a great player. He didn''t make an effort with training sessions, and didn''t play many games. We didn''t even see him show up much even when he was resting through injury...Mascharanas has been there every game all season. We are all so sorry you had to commute so far Kevin!!!!!!!! Rod Bransgrove and the managers made to right choices with not picking him for the glory games. Perhaps we need to look at Englands control over the players, and the ammount of international cricket. Good luck in your future Kevin, but most of all good luck Surrey, lol. Loyal Hampshire Hogg

Is there a cricket ( Rehab) ECB should realise that this is part of todays society. The England cricket set up has everything for its players except someone who has the abillity to look at what is happening beyond the cricket field. When a player like KP fails to produce the goods, there has to be something more pressing than cricket. Take Kp away from the game of cricket. Forget Australia. Kp''s tweet was a cry for help. TC.

2 Points. 1) No England batsman with the exception of Trott, and to a lesser extent Prior has performed this summer.(Collingwood must be the luckiest batsman in the world, he plays 1 innings in 10, and always keeps his place) 2) So what about Twitter, every player has the right to say what they feel. Do we just want automatons who just read eveything from a pre arranged book? I am not a fan of Pietersen, but I do back a players right of self expression.

Alex Olliver says...

He wants to play. He is upset that he is not playing. Surely that is what you want from a professional cricketer? Enough people have doubted his commitment to England over the years, so now he reacts badly to being dropped and that is not good enough either. He needs to be played back into form - as whether people like him or not (like most people, I probably wouldn''t particularly enjoy an evening in his rather boorish company) he is the most gifted England batsman since David Gower and he is too important to our chances of retaining the Ashes, and so playing him into form in a few utterly meaningless one day internationals and some T20 pantomime, would have been perfect.

i really hope kevin gets back in the england team - what makes me cross is that the captain has not performed well and he stays - i think another captain would be more beneficial and the fact that he had to have a rest! kevin is a far better player - and i send my best wishes to him for the future

It does not matter what youv`e done in the past, and pieterson as done lot`s for England, you must be chosen on current and very recent form.Pieterson is out of form big time.I also think collingwood is having a bad recent showing with the bat.I would like to see the same team game after game, but unfortunately players have bad periods.Pieterson i`m afraid considers himself bullet proof, but he`s not.
