Graham Gooch is to join England's coaching team on a temporary basis ahead of the four-Test series in South Africa.

Gooch, who scored 8,900 runs in 118 Tests between 1975-95, will draw on his expertise to assist the current generation in the build-up to the series opener at Centurion on December 16-20.

While England continue a one-day series, currently tied at 1-1 with two matches to play, Gooch will fly out to join the Performance Programme squad in Pretoria.

He will then link up with the Test specialists, coached by his fellow former Essex batsman Andy Flower, after the one-dayers.

Hugh Morris, the England and Wales Cricket Board's managing director, said: "Graham is rightly regarded as one of the best batting coaches in international cricket, and we are delighted to have secured his services for a key period of our preparations leading up to the first Test."
