Australia all-rounder Shane Watson picked up three major awards at the Allan Border Medal ceremony in Melbourne.

Watson was named Australia's Test and One-Day Player of the Year, as well as winning his second consecutive Allan Border Medal - a peer and media voted award for the best player across all formats for the past 12 months.

The 29-year-old was only denied a clean sweep of gongs when David Hussey was adjudged Twenty20 Player of the Year.

Watson was expected to become the second player after Ricky Ponting to win back-to-back Allan Border Medals following an impressive year that saw him score 2,066 runs at 38.98 across all three formats.

He also took 47 wickets in 46 matches to help him collect 295 votes - 100 more than his nearest rival Mike Hussey.

His Test record was even more impressive posting 847 runs at 44.57 during the voting period, which began on February 14 last year, while also taking 16 wickets at 29.25.

Watson won the Test award by four votes from maligned paceman Mitchell Johnson, while he edged out vice-captain Michael Clarke by just a single vote in the 50-over category.

Usman Khawaja, who made his Test debut in the final match of the Ashes in Sydney, was named State Player of the Year with his New South Wales team-mate Trent Copeland voted the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year.
