Tiger Woods fired a bogey-free 65 to move into a four-shot lead after the second round of the Buick Invitational.
The world number one, playing his first event of the year, started with three birdies in four holes on the North Course at Torrey Pines and never looked back.
He picked up further shots at the ninth, 13th, 16th and 18th to sign for a seven-under 65 and a half-way total of 12-under.
That was enough for a four-stroke advantage over fellow American Kevin Streelman and five clear of Stewart Cink.
Despite his superb round, Woods was not entirely satisfied, saying: "I didn't quite drive it as well as I needed to today, but all my drives started off on line, which is good.
"I just over-shaped them. But my iron game was good and I made a bunch of putts, which can sometimes be a pretty tricky task out there. I got a couple of good bounces on the greens, which was nice.
"Tomorrow will be important to go out there and play well, maintain the lead and hopefully increase it."
Streelman and Cink both recorded scores of 69 playing the South Course on Friday to stay in front of a group of three players - Aaron Baddeley (67), Boo Weekley (66) and Brad Adamonis (72) - who are bunched at six-under.
Englishman Kenneth Ferrie finished with four birdies in five holes for a round of 67 that leaves him in a 14-way tie for ninth at four-under.
Also at four-under is first-round leader Troy Matteson, who followed his opening 65 with a less impressive 75.
