Jimenez: Won at second extra hole
Miguel Angel Jimenez edged out Oliver Wilson at the second play-off hole to claim a dramatic win at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
An enthralling final day saw countless shifts in power at the top of the leaderboard and a hole-in-one for Jimenez, but after 72 holes the Spaniard and Wilson could not be separated on -11.
Overnight leader Robert Karlsson, who was four clear at the start of the day, should have joined them in the play-off but missed from four feet on the 18th and, having somehow contrived to three-putt, had to settle for a share of third with Luke Donald on -9.
Wilson, who has now finished second no fewer than four times this season, had the chance to clinch his maiden European Tour title at the first extra hole but saw his ten-foot birdie-putt lip out.
Having gone down the 18th for a second time he faced a similar putt to stay in the tournament but missed, allowing Jimenez to roll in from two feet to seal victory.
Despite the forecasts, the tricky conditions that made life so difficult on Saturday failed to materialise, but while low scoring was possible, as demonstrated by Donald's superb closing 65, the West course still proved a challenge.
Karlsson illustrated the point with a round of 74, including six bogeys, that ultimately dashed his hopes.
The Swede set the tone for a disappointing day by dropping shots at the first and the third and by the seventh he had seen his four-shot lead turn into a three-shot deficit to Jimenez.
By contrast, the Spaniard enjoyed a near dream front nine of 31 strokes, capped by his wonderful ace at the par-three fifth.
That moment of magic took him into the lead on -11 and, with Karlsson heading backwards, it was Wilson who stepped up to challenge him at the top of the leaderboard.
The Englishman also hit the turn in 31 strokes with some superb iron-play setting up birdies at three, four, six and seven.
It was Wilson who got his nose in front at -12 with birdie at the par-five twelfth, but a subsequent bogey at 13 handed the initiative back to Jimenez who also went on to make a four at 12.
The momentum then changed hands again when Wilson drilled in a cracking 15-foot putt for birdie at 15 with Jimenez inexplicably missing from no more than 20 inches for par at the same hole minutes later.
Next it was Wilson's turn to crack, his wayward drive at 17 forcing a penalty drop and a bogey-six that sent him back to -11, level with Jimenez and suddenly only one clear of Karlsson who made a clutch putt for birdie at 16.
A par down the last meant Wilson set the clubhouse target at -11 leaving Jimenez knowing that a birdie-four would be good enough for the title.
However, the Spaniard overshot the green with second and, following a duffed chip, was probably happy to sign off for a par-five that forced a two-man play-off.
Karlsson should have ensured that were three competitors involved but, following a wonderful pitch to four feet, lost his nerve with the putter and with it any chance of the £600,000 winner's cheque.
