Hudson leads home challenge

Hudson: two wins this season

It's a shame when you look at the posters and there are none of our girls.

Quotes of the week

Rebecca Hudson aims to carry the European challenge at this week's Women's British Open.

The Doncaster golfer has won twice on the Ladies European Tour and is hopeful of bagging a maiden major title at Sunningdale.

But Hudson is not impressed by the pre-event publicity which has focused on the LPGA Tour players at the expense of European talent.

World number one Lorena Ochoa, soon-to-be retired Swedish legend Annika Sorenstam and big-name Americans Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis and Morgan Pressel are among a strong contingent making the trip across the Atlantic.

"It's a shame when you look at the posters (for the Women's British Open) and there are none of our girls," said Hudson.

"There will be lots of spectators who will not know who they are and that's just a shame - there are some great golfers out there at the minute."

No Wie

One name that will be missing at the picturesque Berkshire venue is Michelle Wie, who did not attempt to qualify and, instead, intends to line-up against the men at the PGA Tour's Reno-Tahoe Open.

Sorenstam and fellow Swede Helen Alfredsson have both waded into the debate surrounding Wie's apparent obession with engaging in a battle of the sexes.

"I really don't know why Michelle is continuing to do this," said Sorenstam.

"I mean, we have a major this week and if you can't qualify for a major I don't see any reason why you should play with the men."

Alfredsson, winner of last week's Evian Masters, commented: "I think the exhibition time for her is over. I feel kind of sad for her.

"I think she's a very good person. I feel sad for the guidance that she seems not to have in the right direction.

"She was so good a couple of years ago when she finished second a few times. I think she should just keep working on winning. Winning is tough - it takes a different mindset.

"I think if she wants to be a golfer she should really concentrate on being on the women's tour. I just don't see the interest really on being on the men's tour.

"I thought she would have quit that idea, but obviously not."
