Cink and Campbell celebrate
Stewart Cink and Chad Campbell battled back from three down to edge a dramatic match with Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, sealing victory on the final green.
It was the Europeans who started in the more solid fashion, although the first couple of holes were halved with pars.
They did move ahead at the third as Rose produced a wonderful tee-shot to three feet which Poulter converted and the former then sunk a fine 15-foot putt at the fifth to move his side two clear.
The Americans then imploded at the seventh as Campbell found trouble off the tee and, trying to repair the damage with the team's fourth shot, Cink located water to gift their rivals a healthy three-hole advantage.
However, crucially the English duo let their rivals straight back in at the short eighth as Poulter found sand and Cink then holed out well from five feet at the ninth to ensure the Americans hit the turn only two down.
They made further inroads at the next short hole, Rose unable to make a par-putt at the 11th as the lead dwindled to one and as they headed to the 14th tee it was all square as Poulter's weak approach at 13 found water.
The US pair maintained their momentum at the next to hit the front for the first time as the Europeans were again unable to make their par, but a ding-dong contest was instantly level again as Cink inexplicably found water with his approach from the fairway at 15.
With 16 and 17 halved after some fine scrambling from both teams, the match went down the last.
Cink and Poulter both found the centre of the fairway, but Rose crucially put his approach into the bunker guarding the green with Poulter leaving him ten foot for par.
Cink missed his birdie putt, but Rose and Poulter then both missed their putts to keep the match alive as the Americans secured a hard-fought point.
