PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem admits the FedEx Cup series needs fine-tuning with this year's race already decided before the climax at East Lake Country Club.
The event, which was introduced last year, is decided by a four-tournament play-off series with ever-decreasing fields that culminates in the Tour Championship.
The points leader at the conclusion of that event then picks up a deferred $10 million (£5 million) jackpot, however, this year the identity of that man is already known with Vijay Singh having opened up an insurmountable lead.
The Fijian won the first two events of the series - the Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship - to pull way clear of his rivals and leave this week's Tour Championship in Georgia as something of an anti-climax.
Finchem accepts some tweaking of the current FedEx Cup points system is needed but insists there remains plenty to play for at East Lake.
"The reality is the number one position in the FedExCup is sewn up before we get to Atlanta and that was not supposed to be part of the equation," he stated. "So that's an area that we certainly need to look at.
"But I don't think this week is irrelevant now. If you just think about the fact that some $22 million is at stake among these top-30 players in the world, so that means a lot."
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the major windfall coming his way, Singh is delighted by his insuperable position at the top of the points table and is looking forward to what promises to be a memorable week in Atlanta.
The 45-year-old needs only to complete the event to walk away with his prize money, but insists he will be going all out to win and clinch his fourth title of a hugely productive season.
"It's a great feeling to know that all I need to do is tee it up and play and I've already won the FedExCup," Singh said.
"But I want to make the point that I'm going to go out there and try to win the tournament. I love Atlanta and I love East Lake. I've had great success there.
"I know they've changed the golf course a little bit and I want to go out there and win it, make a point that I can win three out of four weeks.
"But I'd rather be in this position than going out there knowing that I have to win (the tournament) to win the Cup. This is a dream for every player out there to be in my position."
