Shin: Leader by one shot
South Korea's Ji-Yai Shin holds a one-shot lead after the opening round of the LPGA Samsung World Championship in California.
The British Open champion, who opted to return to the Korean Tour after her surprise win in August, fired a 67 to sit clear of American Paula Creamer.
Two-time defending champion Lorena Ochoa and Swede Annika Sorenstam are a further shot adrift in a group of six players who finished on three-under.
However, it is Shin who is out on her own in front thanks mainly to a run of four straight birdies from the 12th hole onwards.
The hot streak was finally ended when she bogeyed the 16th - her only dropped shot of the day - meaning the 20-year-old heads the 20-strong field in action at the Ocean Course in Half Moon Bay.
Creamer's score of 68 included five birdies. She is looking to go one better than in 2005 when she finished as runner-up in the tournament.
World number one Ochoa is also well-placed following a round of 69 that featured an impressive eagle at the par-five 10th.
The Mexican is bidding to become the fourth player to win the event at least three times, a feat Sorenstam has already achieved.
The Swede, a five-time champion no less, carded four birdies and one bogey to sit alongside Ochoa. The duo have won the World Championship between them for five of the last six years.
They sit level with Na Yeon Choi, Yani Tseng, who won this year's LPGA Championship, Song-Hee Kim and Angela Stanford.
