The second round of the Volvo Masters was abandoned on Friday after heavy rain washed out play at Valderrama.
Prevailing conditions meant that less than four hours' play was possible in the European Tour's season-ending event.
However, that was long enough for defending champion Justin Rose to fail to break 80 for the second successive day.
Rose subsequently withdrew from the event after being told of the death of his grandfather in South Africa.
Ten players did not even start their second rounds, including overnight leaders Soren Kjeldsen and Sergio Garcia.
Nevertheless, there was still time time to shape the battle for the Order of Merit title after Miguel Angel Jimenez dropped seven strokes in the first four holes before play was halted.
The decision not to have preferred lies clearly affected the Spaniard, with his truncated day's work almost certainly putting him out of the running for the money list title.
Jimenez has to win this weekend to stand a chance - with Robert Karlsson, Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington the only other players in with a chance of taking the crown.
Current number one Karlsson was three over after four holes and Harrington five over after 13, while Westwood had yet to resume on one under.
Rose added an 81 to his opening 80 for a 19-over-par total of 161.
He was adrift of the field by six strokes when play was called off just after midday and then postponed for the day three hours later.
The forecast is not good for the weekend, meaning the last-ever Volvo Masters could be cut to 54 or even 36 holes.
