Ryder Cup debutant Rory McIlory is "quite confident" Europe will regain the trophy at Celtic Manor in October.

European skipper Colin Montgomerie finalised his line-up by picking Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington and Edoardo Molinari as his three wildcards.

Molinari, who joins his brother Francesco in the team, forced his way into the reckoning by winning the Johnnie Walker Championship shortly before Montgomerie announced his decision.

The Italian's inclusion means world number eight Paul Casey and Justin Rose, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour in the last three months, will both be absent from the biennial showpiece.

But McIlroy, who is up to seventh in the world rankings after a consistent season that included a maiden victory on American soil at Quail Hollow, has given his backing to Montgomerie's choices.

Right decision

"Colin had a very tough job," McIlroy, 21, told Sky Sports.

"He had five guys to choose from and whatever three he chose was going to be the right decision.

"Paul Casey and Justin Rose are very unlucky to miss out but Europe still have an exceptionally strong team.

"I feel quite confident that we are going to get the Ryder Cup back off the Americans."
