Jason Day birdied the final hole to move into a one-shot lead at the end of the third round of the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The Australian rolled in a straightforward putt to finish with a four at the par-five 18th and sign for a round of 66 in testing conditions in Norton.

Day, who clinched his maiden win on the PGA Tour in Texas back in May, carded just the single bogey to move to 17 under for the tournament.

"I played great today and just made one little mistake," he said, referring to his bogey at the 16th.

Happy

"Overall I feel very happy with how I played and how I handled myself. Tomorrow I'm just going to try to do what I did today."

Brandt Snedeker, who had begun Sunday's play level with Day at the top of the leaderboard, is a shot back after signing for a 67.

Englishman Luke Donald is well placed on 15 under par - two off the pace - after a 66 that included five birdies on an impressive back nine.

Steve Stricker, who could yet take over as world number one from Tiger Woods by the end of the tournament, and Charley Hoffman are a further two shots back in a tie for fourth place.

Phil Mickelson, another contender for the top spot, is looming large after a four-under-par 67 took him to 12 under for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Woods seems certain to extend his winless streak despite following up his stunning score of 65 on Saturday with a 69.

The American sits 10 strokes back - he started the day seven adrift - but does now look almost certain to remain alive in the FedEx Cup play-offs. The next event, the third of four in the series, is the BMW Championship.
